Verizon Wireless has announced its first Long Term Evolution (LTE), specifications for the "open" devices that will use its upcoming proto-4G network. The largest CDMA operator in the United States will start to go commercial with LTE early in 2009, with a wider launch in 2010. The LTE specification will be useful for vendors developing cards, PDAs, and other perhaps telemedicine and medical devices. Long Term Evolution, 4G is the next step for today's existing 3G networks. The potential of 50MB/sec to 100MB/sec., opens up all kinds of potential for the transfer of video and DICOM images to mobile devices. Verizon started to move its CDMA network to an open access model last year. Open access rules were a part of the condition of the FCC imposed with selling the 700MHz C-band that Verizons LTE will use. Forthcoming DAS systems should look to support 700MHz.
